Ageless Beauty Secrets with Dr. Sears

The Bare Truth About
Mineral Makeup

Dear Reader,

I’m a firm believer that beautiful skin begins on the inside...but I still like to wear a little makeup.

I try to look for natural products, but I usually have to settle for something I’m not entirely comfortable with. Have you noticed how many of the top brands use what are considered toxic chemicals in their ingredients?

That’s why many women—myself included—have switched to mineral makeup instead of the traditional stuff. But I have to warn you about something. I’ve noticed a troubling trend.

Just because it says “mineral” on the package doesn’t mean it’s good for your skin.

While you’re trying to cover up wrinkles or imperfections, the hidden chemicals in your makeup are working against you. In fact, they may be killing your skin.

Every day I help patients here at Dr. Sears' Center for Health and Wellenss make safer choices about what goes into their bodies and onto their skin. This is especially important in today’s world, where much of what we eat or touch is processed and unnatural. The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that I’ve helped the women I work with to feel good on the inside and look their best on the outside.

So when I did some digging to find out what was really in some of those “mineral” foundations, I couldn’t believe what I saw...

How to tell if you’re using a mineral makeup impostor

Thanks to infomercials and the Internet, you’ve probably already heard how mineral makeup can be a healthier choice for your skin. But that’s only true if you’re using the real thing.

“Mineral” has become a buzzword...and a lot of brands out there are trying to jump on the bandwagon.
But some hardly contain any healthy minerals at all. And they’ve got dangerous additives that can irritate your skin and clog your pores.

They can even make you look older!

Take a look at just a few of the toxins I found in popular “mineral” foundations:

  • Parabens. Used as preservatives, parabens are nothing but toxins that can disrupt your hormones. I switched to mineral makeup to avoid I was shocked to see them on the labels of so many “mineral” formulas. You’ll see them listed as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.
  • Bismuth oxychloride. This ingredient is not found in nature. It’s made by combining water, chloride (from chlorine) and a by-product of lead smelting. Lots of brands use it as a filler. When it gets warm on your skin, it can cause itching and irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin and rosacea. It’s been known to cause rashes on very delicate complexions.
  • Talc. One study showed that inhaling talc can irritate the lungs and lead to breathing problems. That’s reason enough for me to avoid mineral powders with talc.
  • Dimethicone. In some women, this silicone compound can cause a mild rash or tingling sensation...and even irritate acne-prone skin.
  • Micronized minerals. Some mineral makeup is made with very small particles—or even nanoparticles. These microscopic particles are more likely to be absorbed right into the skin, instead of remaining on the surface. There’s growing concern that this could be hazardous. These smaller particles also have a way of settling into fine lines, which magnifies the look of wrinkles.
  • Chemical coatings. Here’s where it gets even trickier. Some brands start out with great mineral ingredients...but then they coat them in chemicals as a preservative! And the law doesn’t require this to be listed on the label.

But as a medical professional, it’s my job to watch out for this...and I can’t just watch.

I’m not comfortable with the idea of covering my face in toxins that aren’t good for me...especially since I wear makeup for 12 to 16 hours every day. Do manufacturers think we’re too busy to notice what's in there?

When you think about how much effort you’ve put into finding just the right cleansers and creams...why should you have to ruin all that hard work by using a makeup loaded with toxins?

Wouldn’t it be better if the makeup you wear every minute of the day made your skin healthier? Let me show you how it can.

Here at our South Florida clinic, we’ve been working to find you something that could truly be called mineral makeup. And we wanted it to include nutrients that fight the visible signs of aging.

It didn't exist. I was talking with Dr. Sears about it, and he just smiled and said to me...

“If we can’t find the right mineral makeup, we’ll make it ourselves”

I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. To get started, our staff at the clinic put together a wish list of everything we wanted—and everything we didn’t—in a new mineral foundation.

We set our expectations high...and the list kept growing.

Above all, it had to give us flawless, natural coverage—even for people who have rosacea, like some of our patients do. But it still had to feel light on the skin, in order to “breathe.”

It had to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, instead of settling into facial creases like many other foundations do. And it would be nice if it had a little natural sun protection in it, as our fair-skinned staffer M.H. pointed out.

But NO parabens. NO preservatives. NO fragrances.

NO petroleum products. NO waxes to clog pores.

NO micronized minerals.

In fact, it had to be gentle enough for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

After careful research, we had a blueprint for a better mineral makeup. Dr. Sears searched for a local manufacturer here in Florida so that he could observe the quality himself.

The result of our vision? We call it...

Pure Essentials Mineral Makeup:
A makeup that lives up to its name

And when we began testing this new mineral makeup on ourselves at the clinic, I couldn’t believe the results.

Neither could the other women around the office.

Here are my own before and after photos! I love how light and natural it feels on my skin. (Click here for a larger photo)

The first thing we noticed was the creamier texture. The different mix of ingredients in Pure Essentials makes the foundation smoother—so it glides right onto your skin.

D.G. came bursting into my office the first time she tried it. “It feels great! Goes on smooth and it’s easy to get the coverage I need for the day!”

K.B. told me, “I put it on in the morning and when I get home from work, I still look as fresh as I did when I left. Plus my excess oil is gone. I’ve tried hundreds of different products to keep my oily skin under control and now I don’t have to blot throughout the day!”

M.H., who has acne-prone sensitive skin, said, “It covers everything I want to hide and doesn’t irritate my skin. Look—my redness is gone!”

Pure Essentials Mineral Makeup works no matter how much coverage you need. Take a look at the beautiful, even coverage on A.L.’s severe rosacea. (Click here for a larger photo)

My favorite success story is from my friend A.L., who has severe rosacea and very sensitive skin. Take a look at the before and after photos she shared with us.

And it makes a difference you can feel, too. Here’s a note I received that explains it pretty well:

“Pure Essentials Mineral Makeup is amazing! I hardly feel like I’m wearing makeup at all. My mom even said ‘You look made up, but you don’t look like you’re wearing makeup!’”
—J.S., Loxahatchee, Florida

And we did it without using chemicals, toxins or preservatives

Through all of this investigative work, we discovered something interesting: It’s possible to create a chemical-free mineral foundation with about 5 ingredients.

The staff at our clinic thought L.F. looked 10 years younger with Pure Essentials! (Click here for a larger photo)

That’s all you really need.

We don’t even use preservatives. The minerals have a long shelf life, so if you keep your makeup dry, there’s no reason at all to add preservatives.

But to make this foundation even better...we added potent natural nutrients that nourish your skin and help fight the visible signs of aging.

Here’s what makes me happy to recommend this foundation to my patients. Pure Essentials has:

  • CoQ10, to help your skin look younger and keep your complexion radiant. It rejuvenates your skin all the way down at the cellular level.
  • Resveratrol, a supercharged form of red wine extract known for zapping wrinkles and making your skin look younger.
  • Pure Essentials Mineral Makeup is FREE of harmful additives.

  • Allantoin, a natural, skin-soothing moisturizer that’s great for sensitive skin.
  • Pomegranate seed, a potent antioxidant extract with 95% ellegic acid, to protect your delicate skin cells from free radical damage.
  • Licorice root, which is very soothing for troubled skin, and used for itching and redness.
  • Acerola extract, also known as West Indian cherry, is one of the most potent sources of vitamin C—a healing antioxidant that’s important for healthy skin.
  • Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, to condition the skin. It’s particularly good for reducing the signs of acne scars and wrinkles.
  • Zinc oxide, a natural healing compound that has antimicrobial properties. Best of all, it’s a chemical-free sunscreen. It’s so gentle that it’s used in creams for babies.
  • Honey powder is naturally antibacterial—just one more reason we don’t need artificial preservatives!

"Finally—oil control, even in this humidity"
“My skin is oily as it is, so combined with the sweltering humidity here in South Florida, wearing makeup used to seem pointless to me. But Pure Essentials is different. I put it on in the morning and when I get home from work, I still look as fresh as I did when I left.

“Plus my excess oil is gone. I’ve tried hundreds of different products to keep my oily skin under control and now I don’t have to blot throughout the day. It’s truly amazing.”
—K.B., Lake Worth, Florida.

I like the idea of giving my skin a little extra nourishment and protection every time I apply my makeup. You put it on just like you’re used to doing with other mineral makeup, but you don’t have to worry about what else is in it.

To get started with any new foundation, the first thing you need is the perfect shade for your complexion. So how can you find the best match?

The foolproof guide to finding your perfect shade

It can be hard to know which shade is right for you just by looking at a color swatch.

There are 8 illuminating shades you can choose from, and it’s important to remember that the way it looks in the jar is not the way it will look on your face.

Just follow this foolproof guide and you’ll be on target for your skin tone...

*If your complexion looks like...

I also like having the option of mixing two shades for a better match when my skin is looking a little lighter or when I’ve gotten a little sun.

5 Ways to Brighten Your Natural Glow...

The mineral blushes brighten up your cheeks, but that’s not all. You can also mix them with a clear gloss and use them for lip color, or with a moisturizer for eye shadow.

Blush-Glow Blush-Rose

A sheer, pale pink with just a touch of shimmer

A rosy shade with a
dewy shimmer

Blush-Apricot Blush-Bronze

A soft, matte shade that flatters all skin tones

A deeper shade that
gives you a healthy,
fresh-air glow

A neutral shade with a touch of shimmer
for deeper skin tones

...Then Add the
Finishing Touch

Finishing powder gives you a soft, polished look. It also softens fine lines, controls oil in your T-zone, and “sets” your makeup so it lasts all day.

Finishing Powder 1 Finishing Powder 2

Finishing Powder #2
For deeper skin tones

But our makeup routines don’t end with foundation. That’s why we also worked with our manufacturer to create mineral blushes and finishing powders to complete your polished look.

Each shade of mineral blush was designed to take your radiant glow and kick it up a notch. For me, the best part is that the blushes are very sheer and add just a touch of shimmer. It adds a gentle highlight to my face, and I don’t have to worry about overdoing it.

I’ve also found that the blushes make great, non-irritating eye shadows, so it’s been fun to play around with them. You can also use them with your lip balm in place of lipstick.

The finishing powder is the quick, final step that brings the whole look together. It sets the foundation so that it won’t brush off easily and can last all day. It also softens up the look of fine lines and wrinkles quite nicely.

The velvety texture gives you that youthful, glowing-from-within effect and illuminates your entire face.
